[SMM Analysis] increased by 106%! Analysis of Manganese Mine Import in Ghana, China in 2018

SMM, Jan. 28: according to SMM and customs data, China imported 3.47 million tons of manganese ore from Ghana in 2018, an increase of 106 percent over 2017. The main reason for the growth is that Ningxia Tianyuan manganese industry has expanded production of the Ghanaian manganese mining company, which is 90 per cent owned by CML (United mining of Australia).

As can be seen from the chart, in 2018, from the second half of the year, the import volume of Ghana manganese ore in Tianyuan manganese industry began to show a significant increase, and by the fourth quarter, the total import volume from October to December reached the level of 1.37 million tons.

After manganese ore production gradually exceeds the consumption of electrolytic manganese, more Ghanaian minerals can be exported, and more handsome profits can be made in 2018, when the price of imported manganese ore is high. According to the understanding of SMM, there are about 200000 tons of Ghana manganese mine reservoir in Qinzhou Port at present. Some people believe that, considering the relatively small scale of the Southern Manganese Alloy Plant and the poor affordability of the electrolytic manganese plant to the Ghanaian mine at the market price, it is possible to send it to Tianjin Port for sale in the future. There are many large factories in the northern manganese alloy industry, which have the ability of supporting sintering. Under the condition of reasonable price, there may be a certain consumption potential for manganese carbonate ore.
